The smart decision drunk college women are making

More college women are having safe sex while completely wasted, according to a new study in the Journal of Sex Research. Surprisingly, they are being safer when they’re drunk than sober.

The study, which surveyed 297 women in college about their 1,856 sexual experiences, found that they are more likely to use a condom when drunk because the hookup tends to be casual. But sober sex tends to be with someone they are in a relationship with, and they don’t feel using a condom is as necessary because they are using other forms of birth control and are less worried about contracting an STD.

Of the women surveyed, condoms were used 70 percent of the time during drunk sex and 59 percent of the time during sober sex. While it’s good that more women are using condoms after a night of heavy drinking, 70 percent is still quite low considering that people between the ages of 15 and 24 account for 50 percent of all new HIV infections, a statistic the study also points out. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 33,300 new HPV-associated cancers occur each year and 776,000 people are diagnosed with genital herpes each year.

Still, the new study is encouraging, showing that college women know using a condom is a smart decision, and it’s something they don’t forget about after playing Flip Cup.
