LinkedUp! uses LinkedIn to help you find dates

Max Fischer, president and CEO of LinkedUp!, says he got the idea to create a LinkedIn-based dating app after he noticed that people were using career networking site to find dates – himself included.

“It’s just a new medium for people to find quality people,” Fischer tells Metro. “I’ve gone on dates through LinkedIn and found people have more in common as a result. You’re able to see a little more about someone.” Fischer says his friends also discussed using LinkedIn to find dates, prompting him to devise his own plan for a new app. The former investment professional has been working on LinkedUp! since May 2013 and it went live last Wednesday.

LinkedUp! pulls information from your LinkedIn profile, like your industry, schools and job, though you can choose to hide some of the fields. People viewing your profile can also see if you share any connections, and who those shared contacts are.

“It answers where you’re from, what you do and where you went to school,” says Fischer. “These are the initial questions people ask at a bar to gain rapport between two people. That’s the awesomeness about it – LinkedIn is a great platform. It gives you a very true sense of those things that I just mentioned.”

Users can search for matches by industry and then choose to “pass” or “like.” If two users like each other, LinkedUp! will open a chatline between them. The app does not limit the number of matches per day.

But don’t ask Fischer about the potential for daters to use LinkedUp! as a platform for gold-digging – he recoils at the idea. “That is definitely not the case whatsoever,” he says. “I would stay as far away from that as possible … It’s far away from the gold-digging concept.”

We took LinkedUp! for a spin and checked off all available industries. We found more users on the app than we expected for such a new platform, but we also noticed as we went further along that some users lived very, very far away, like a 57-year-old man in Norway. Still, it’s nice to see people’s earnest professional head shots and the mutual connection feature makes it feel safer.
