Channel your strengths

Recently, I spoke to best-selling author Marcus Buckingham about his latest book, “Find Your Strongest Life: What the Happiest and Most Successful Women Do Differently,” which was inspired by the overwhelming responses from his appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

How are you supposed to find out what you’re born to do?

Finding what we’re born to do is more of a journey. How are you feeling about what you’re doing now? Evaluate that and then you gradually build your way by paying attention to the signs that are there out in the world.

What gets in the way of our happiness? What are the obstacles?

The first obstacle is that we don’t take ourselves seriously, and we devalue ourselves because our strengths are things that are easy for us. The second thing is that there’s an awful lot of people in the world who don’t really care about what our strengths are. The last thing is that, although our natural talents and gifts are ingrained in us, probably inherited in us at birth, the ability to channel them effectively are not.

What are three things successful women and men do in their careers?

The first thing is that they push themselves within their strength zone, which means they’re constantly experimenting in order to look and discover more about what’s inside them. They accept what they find, by saying “This is me.” Lastly, they find those strong moments, those strong activities in their life, and they deliberately imbalance their life toward them.
