Doomsday becomes reality: school district lays off 3,783 with more to come

The School District of Philadelphia announced Friday it will lay off 3,783 employees, with more to come.

The employee cuts include: 1,202 aides, 676 teachers, 307 secretaries, 283 counselors and 127 assistant principals. They will be terminated as of July 1. The district expects to save about $215 million from the layoffs.

Additional lay off notices will be distributed this week to an unknown amount of the 700 administrative employees who work out of the district’s headquarters.

Additional departmental budget cuts should account for about $23 million is savings.

Before the notices, the school district employed about 19,530.

The cuts are part of the plan to help close the district’s $304 million budget hole. The 2013-2014 budget was passed on May 30, in spite of the impending doomsday scenario, by the state-run School Reform Commission.

Hite has said that if any money becomes available he would try and return some eliminated positions.

Hite asked City Council for $60 million, the state for $120 million, and about $130 million from union concessions.

Mayor Michael Nutter’s plan to raise the liquor-by-the-drink tax and a $2 cigarette tax are still on the table, but have not met approvals.
