Moving tips for the college crowd

Staying organized is key on the big day.
Staying organized is key on the big day.

There’s a lot more to moving into your college dorm than what’s in the boxes. Emotions are running high, families are running rampant and it’s very easy to get lost in the chaos of so many people and their things. Check out these tips to make the day as low stress as possible.

Check out your space.
Get the specifics from your university — is your dorm new or old construction? Is there air conditioning? Find out the size of the room, as well as what furnishings are included. If you’re moving into a house or an apartment, check for damage from previous tenants and alert your landlord. That way, you won’t get charged for another person’s carelessness.

Be resourceful.
Packing materials can be expensive. Don’t pay for them – use old newspapers and plastic grocery bags, or wrap breakable belongings in jeans, towels and sweatshirts that you plan on bringing with you anyway. Double duty packing saves space and protects your fragile items.

Make it quick.
Moving day is hectic – pack your car the day before so you’re ready to go. If possible, move into your new place midweek instead of the weekend when everyone else is moving. If a mid-week move isn’t in the cards, try to arrive on campus as early as the university allows on move-in day – the later you arrive, the harder it will be to park.

Mind the temperature.
Midday temperatures in late summer can be brutal. Pack items that won’t hold up in the heat in boxes to be unloaded first, and label the boxes, “open first.” Things like aerosol sprays, candles and certain electronics can melt, explode or suffer damage if left in high temperatures for too long.
