PHOTOS: @Cookingforbae highlights the worst meals posted to Instagram

Instagram is a feeding frenzy of tantalizing photos of food posted by users who are out dining or flaunting the meals they’ve whipped up at home. A quick search for #foodporn will return nearly 170 million photos of food.

While many people showcase their finest meals on the web, there are some people who post food pictures that don’t look so tasty. It could be terrible lighting or poor presentation, but some of these meals just simply don’t look appealing. These creations are considered “struggle plates:” a meal that looks unappetizing or is presented poorly.

Enter @Cookingforbae. It wasn’t long before this Instagram account sprung to life, offering a public forum to expose these poorly created meals. If you’re wondering where the “bae” comes from, it’s a term of endearment, short for “baby.”

Metro caught up with “Cook Bae,” the creator behind the account who wishes to remain anonymous, to learn more about the Instagram hit.

Metro: How did you come up with the name “cookingforbae”?

The name actually came from a fun night with friends. We were discussing how our timelines (Twitter and Instagram) were filled with pictures of food that no one should feed their significant other. Most of the captions read ‘cooking for the bae.’ I don’t know when ‘bae’ became a term of endearment. But hey, it worked for our page name!

Are all these plates from people who are cooking for someone or are there a lot from people just trying to show off?

In the beginning, the pictures were all that of postings from me and my friends’ timelines. We added the email so people could submit their photos. To be honest, we’re very picky on the ones that are posted. You can tell which photos are actually trying to just show off as opposed to the ones that think they can cook.

When did you create it?

The page was created July of this year.

Tell us the definition of a “struggle plate.”

The definition of a struggle plate is something that may have been a good idea at the time, but does not look like something anyone should eat! The things I look for in a struggle plate and ask myself include: Can the items be identified? Would I eat it? Would my dog eat it? Is it humorous? It can vary, but we try to stay away from foods that may be the norm in different cultures. It could offend people from that culture.

Are all the photos submissions, or do you go trolling for pictures?

The photos are coming from submissions now! We get hundreds of emails each day!

You have over 20,000 followers on your Instagram page. You posted a picture showing the dramatic increase in your followers in three days. How do you feel about that? Why do you think it’s become so familiar?

At first, I didn’t understand why the followers increased so much over a few days. One of our followers mentioned they saw it posted on the site FirstWeFeast.com. Shortly after, Complex magazine posted something to their Facecbook page. I also found out Christine Teigen (John Legend’s wife and motivational speaker/model) tweeted about the page. Collectively, their mentions definitely helped. It was pretty amazing to wake up and see the numbers go up like that! Who knew people would get a kick out looking at nasty food. Thanks, bae!
