Rent.com conducts survey on holiday tipping for building staff

Live in a staffed apartment building? Well, first of all, lucky you! There are those of us still schlepping our own bags up our six-floor walk-ups and shouldering loads of laundry down the street in the snow.

Second of all, being the lucky, fully-staffed individual you are, you’re expected to tip your (we assume) friendly and attentive building staff during the holidays. But how much is too little? And, on the flip side, how much is overkill? Holiday tipping (well, any tipping scenario, really) can be a tricky business, and awkward for all parties involved.

Rent.com conducted a national survey, amongst 1,000 renters, to see where renters stand this year, tipping-wise. The finding were rather divisive. Turns out more than one quarter of renters in staffed buildings are NOT planning to tip this year.

More on the Grinches:
-Another 11 percent of renters only plan to tip a combined total of no more than $20, due to feeling strapped for cash.
-20 percent plan to tip $20-$50 total.

Others, however, are feeling more generous

The survey found that, on the flip side, more than half of renters are feeling more fiscally comfortable this year and two percent will tip more than $1,000!

And when it comes to general consensus for what is appropriate, the survey was again divided:

-29 percent of renters believe $20-$35 is acceptable.
-But 25 percent think it’s not necessary to tip at all.
-6 percent tip each staffer more than $75.
-And, finally, five percent plan to “tip” creatively — with baked goods, a thoughtful note or handmade gift.
