New Year’s Eve ideas for families

Whether you want to go out or celebrate at home, we have you covered.

Once you have kids, New Year’s Eve is no longer the drunken, glam night it once was. But that doesn’t mean the fun is over. Here are five festive ways for you to ring in the new year with your whole family.

Fireworks in the park. For once, it isn’t bitter cold this New Year’s Eve. Take advantage of the mild weather and take your kids to the Prospect Park NYE fireworks display. To make it extra special, bring sparkling grape juice and cookies covered in glittery sprinkles to munch on. It’s one of the few ways to go out and celebrate in the area for free. The event starts at 11 p.m.

Dress up at home. The childless shouldn’t be the only ones who get to wear something festive. Throw your own fete at home — either for just your family or for a few other families you’re close to — and insist everyone dress up, at least a little. Buy some fun NYE party favors, like 2014 glasses and top hats to really get into the spirit of things.

Make it an early night. If you have young kids, celebrate early in the evening by taking them to a museum — the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and Children’s Museum of Manhattan are both throwing free events where kids can make crafts and learn about NYE traditions. Then, you can put them to bed without feeling too guilty and celebrate alone with your spouse.

Make some noise. For a fun night at home, count down the hours to midnight by letting your kids pop a balloon every hour until 12 p.m. Then, once it’s officially 2014, let them bash a pinata full of candy and confetti. For once, the neighbors can’t complain about the ruckus.

Celebrate around the world. Pop some popcorn and gather around the TV to ring in the new year with countries around the world. Whether you have young kids or teens, everyone will enjoy seeing the most amazing firework displays in countries near and far. It makes the night truly feel like a nonstop celebration when you’re counting down every hour.
