Protect yourself with these self-defense tips
You never know when you might need to save your own life. Follow this advice from self-defense expert Jarrett Arthur.
What attackers look for:
Attackers typically choose “easy” or vulnerable looking victims to target. People who are distracted, not paying attention to their surroundings, have dulled senses (think ear buds or headphones), are alone or in isolated locations, and people who appear timid, or meek make for the best targets because they increase the likelihood that the attacker will succeed with their assault quickly, without much of a struggle, and without getting caught.
If you’re attacked from the front:
If you are attacked from the front aim for the eyes, nose, throat, and groin, and strike with hard parts of your body such as your knuckles, the heel of your palm, your knee, shin and elbow.
If you’re attacked from the back:
You’re at a serious disadvantage if you get attacked from behind, so prevention is the best strategy. By being vigilant, paying attention to your surroundings, and limiting distractions you can reduce the chances of someone sneaking up on your from behind.
But if prevention is not an option and an attacker grabs you from behind in a bear hug, immediately drop your weight by bending your legs, shift your hips to the side and strike to the groin with a closed fist. Foot stomps, a heel to the groin (by bending your leg explosively), and sending a backwards headbutt are all secondary striking options that can be effective.
