South Philadelphia residents could get a faster, cheaper commute to Market Street West under a proposal being evaluated by SEPTA.

The plan involves changes to the Route 57 bus, which travels along Third Street from Whitman Plaza in South Philadelphia to Fern Rock in North Philadelphia. The new route would run west along Market Street to 20th to service people working in the Central Business District.

It is among several proposals included in SEPTA’s service plan that would be implemented in Fall 2012. Charles Webb, head of SEPTA’s service planning, said the agency still has to perform a cost-benefit analysis to determine the route’s feasibility.

“On the east side of City Hall, we have traditionally ... never had a route that came either from the north or the south and went west,” Webb said.

One concern, he said, is that riders who get off at points north of Market Street would have to transfer to another bus.
