Lovers spat ends in gunshots, arrests

What began as a lover’s quarrel early Sunday morning escalated into an armed standoff with police that left one man with a gunshot wound.

At around 12:03 a.m. Sunday, a 27-year-old woman walked into McGeehan’s Bar, on the 4400 block of Cottman Avenue, and ordered a drink, police said.

About 10 minutes later her 21-year-old boyfriend walked into the bar and attempted to convince his girlfriend to leave. When she refused he started yelling and cursing, police said.

According to police, bar staff asked the man to leave, but he returned armed minutes later and fired several shots through the bar’s windows, striking a 23-year-old man in the left arm. Another round shattered a mirror in which a bartender was standing close by, police said.

After police arrived and started conducting an investigation, a 55-year-old man arrived – police said he received a call about the earlier shooting – and exited his car with a loaded handgun. Police said one round discharged in the general area where police and witnesses were standing.

The man was ordered to drop the gun, he refused and a struggle ensued between the police and the gunman. Police wrestled the handgun away from the man, and also found anotherfirearm loaded with nine rounds in the man’s waistband.

Police said his permit to carry a firearm was expired. He was arrested, but his charges have to be made public.

Neither of the shooter’s identities were revealed, but the 21-year-old man did turn himself into police.
