On an idyllic block just feet away from the beach at the Jersey Shore, a SWAT team shot a man who was allegedly threatening his 17-month-old son with a knife this morning, authorities say.

Scott McAllister, 39, was killed around 4:30 a.m. today in Middleton Township after a five hour-standoff.

According to the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, McAllister's wife called 911 at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to report a domestic incident.

When officers arrived, she claimed that McAllister was drunk, had beaten her, was armed with a knife and was threatening to harm their child, and had locked himself inside the house with their child.

The Monmouth County Emergency Response Team arrived at the scene, where a hostage negotiator attempted throughout the night to convince McAllister to peacefully leave his home on Bayside Parkway, police said.

After those efforts were unsuccessful, SWAT stormed the house.

"They encountered McAllister, who is believed to have been armed with a knife. One member of the team fired at McAllister, fatally wounding him. The child, who was near McAllister, was not harmed," the New Jersey Attorney General's Office said in a statement.

The shooting is currently under review.
