John Bolaris: My ‘state of the local news’ address
For more than 16 years I was in your living room being watched for your very latest weather forecast. It’s been over a year now since I floated out your weather window and now I sit being the watcher.
In the past I never really had the chance to watch the news but now I do. My observations are my own personal opinions and not to be construed as critical or blowing smoke.
Being on the news here since 1990 — with the exception of a five-year stint in NYC — I’ve earned the right.
6ABC » Jim Gardner is the franchise, the king of TV anchors, although a native New Yorker, Jim is a true Philadelphian starting his career at WPVI in 1976.
Thirty-seven years earns you trust and respect — the kind of trust and respect that will never be captured again in this market. Jim and Cecily Tynan are Action News.
Fox29 » If you want to start your day with a smile in the morning, then it’s Mike Jerrick and Shanell Jones. It’s more of an entertainment talk show format interrupted by news and Mike is a very likeable guy, and probably the only person who can make that format work.
Dave Schratwieser and Jeff Cole are two of the hardest working reporters that I got to work with, along with rising star Chris O’Connell.
NBC10 » To me, they are like our own Philadelphia Eagles, going through a re-building stage. [News director] Anzio Williams is the new gunslinger in town, much like Chip Kelly.
Both will be game-changers with fresh new offensive schemes. Vai Sikahema is NBC’s new quarterback, Sheena Parveen is the rising star, Hurricane Schwartz, while still a player, is getting a little more bench time.
Eric Lerner is the GM, a Howie Roseman-type and he has the final say. I still have a soft spot for them as I was once part of that team for over 12 years, best of luck to them
CBS3 » From top to bottom this is the most balanced, strongest all-around news and weather team in this market. When you watch them, you really do get the feeling that they are sincerely trying to help you, besides giving you the news.
Susan Schiller has been the news director for more than a decade. Chris May and Susan Barnett have a wonderful chemistry, the strongest evening anchor duo hands down. Like they just popped off the top of a wedding cake, warm and likeable.
The 3 K’s (Kathy Orr, Katie Fehlinger, Kate Bilo) form the best weather team in the area. They give you the real weather deal, no hype and you can tell they do their homework. And don’t forget two of the biggest names in this market, Ukee Washington and Beasley Reece. If you haven’t watched, you’re missing out!
