These photos of a bloodied eel-like animal spreading online are not from the set of a new science fiction movie by the creators of “Sharktopus.” This is real life.

The photos, which where posted on Reddit and have received more than a million views, show a bloodied, giant eel-like fish captured by a New Jersey man with his boy and arrow.

That’s right, a man named Doug Cutler allegedly captured this sea creature with a bow and arrow, as if the Garden State is the new arena for the “Hunger Games.”

The identity of the ‘sea monster’ is not yet known. According to the New York Daily News, scientists at Outdoor magazine think the creature is a very large sea lamprey, a species of parasite that lives in certain northern Atlantic waters.

“The photo doesn’t allow counting of gill openings (seven per side for sea lampreys), but based on size alone, this does appear to be a sea lamprey,” a New York Department of Environmental Conservations spokeswoman told the magazine.

According to the Daily News, sea lampreys typically measure up to 3 feet therefore making the animal in the photo a freakishly large lea lamprey.

Until the identity is figured out, let’s stay away from the waters of Jersey.
