Pa. House set to vote on liquor privatization today

The Pennsylvania House will likely vote Thursday on a measure to privatize wine and liquor sales in a state with a long history of government-run alcohol sales.

In a move that surprised many, House Democrats on Wednesday withdrew dozens of amendments, shortening what was expected to be a long debate on proposed changes to the liquor bill, CBS3 reports.

Even if the privatization bill passes the House, it would have to be approved by the Senate. Proponents of a liquor-sales system overhaul, including Gov. Tom Corbett, expect a tougher fight in the Senate.

In addition to taking the sale of wine and liquor from public to private, the bill would permit the sale of wine in grocery stores.

Utah is the only other state with government-run liquor sales.
