Penn engineering student dies overseas while studying abroad
A 20-year-old University of Pennsylvania engineering student died in a rock-climbing accident Sunday while studying abroad in South Africa, The Daily Pennsylvanian reports.
Junior Oliver Pacchiana, who studied mechanical engineering, was studying at the University of Cape Town. He visited Namibia, which is a country about 1,000 miles north of Cape Town, to rock climb, according to Penn’s student newspaper.
“[Oliver] was an outdoorsman and a scholar,” Pacchiana’s brother, Nolan Pacchiana, said in an email to the student newspaper. “We liked to joke about the time he brought a physics textbook on a camping trip.”
