Roberta’s restaurant ad for unpaid intern causes Bushwick backlash

Roberta’s pizza, arguably the most famous pizza place in New York City (even the Clintons ate there!) is seeking unpaid interns to work in the garden.

A Craigslist posting, that has since been removed from the site but can be found here, describes what the intern will be doing.

“Job/activities will include producing fruits, vegetables and edible flowers … Help maintain our bee hives as well as harvest honey.”

There’s no pay, but there’s free pizza during ever shift. The listing also seems to suggest that what will be taught is much more valuable than money.

“Compensation is learning how to run an urban farm.”

The idea of an unpaid intern at a restaurant with hours-long wait which also charges $18 for a pizza was met with much backlash.

The blog NewYorkShitty spotted a sign posted on Morgan Avenue that reads, “For having already contributed so greatly to the damaging gentrification of Bushwick, is Roberta’s so greedy as to exploit workers and flout labor laws, just to save a measly few bucks an hour?”

According to Gothamist, Roberta’s issued the following statement in support of their intern program:

“We do offer internships that involve working with our head gardener. These internships are unpaid. Interns sign on – voluntarily – to learn about planting and growing edible plants in an urban environment and to help share that knowledge with the surrounding community, by, for example, helping to give educational tours of the garden to school groups. All of this information and more is clearly stated in the advertisement for the internship.”
