‘Ding Dong’ song to mark Margaret Thatcher’s death poses problem for BBC

“Ding Dong The Witch is Dead” from “The Wizard of Oz” is being downloaded to mark the death of Margaret Thatcher.

A song from the movie “The Wizard of Oz,” being used to mark the death of Margaret Thatcher, is posing an ethical dilemma for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

Since Thatcher died earlier this week, “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead” has been downloaded more than 20,000 times from services such as iTunes. Opponents of Thatcher’s economic policies say the song is a way of celebrating her death and marking their disapproval of the social injustice they claim she caused.

The sales have pushed the song to No. 4 in the UK’s singles charts, with experts saying it has a good chance of being No. 1 by the time the official weekly download chart comes out Sunday.

Each week, the BBC broadcasts the Top 20 songs in the charts, but has faced calls from supporters of Thatcher to block to broadcast of Ding Dong” this week, a few days before Thatcher’s funeral.

A Facebook page was set up earlier this week to encourage downloading of the song. The page has been liked by thousands of people.

Despite widespread anger and disgust at celebrations of Thatcher’s death, the BBC has said it is likely to broadcast the song if it is at the top of the download chart.

The BBC has faced criticism this week over alleged left-wing bias in its coverage of Thatcher’s death. The BBC has long been accused of having a distinctive center-left, metropolitan political bias — something it disputes — and this week has featured several interviews with bitter opponents of Thatcher.
