Mayor Nutter to announce Philadelphia as host for international sports summit
Mayor Michael Nutter is expected to announce Wednesday that Philadelphia will host the 2013 International Beyond Sport Summit & Awards.
“The Summit celebrates sports teams and players who use the power of sport to do good and make a difference in their communities,” according to a statement.
The event, which will take place from September 9 to 11, was previously held in London in 2012 and Cape Town, South Africa in 2011.
Philadelphia Eagles Co-Owner Christina Weiss Lurie, team president Don Smolenski and former player Brian Dawkins will join former Philadelphia 76ers player Dikembe Mutombo Nutter at 11 a.m. for the announcement.
Sports figures from six continents are gathered “to promote the use of sports to address social issues and trigger positive change,” according to a news release.
Muhammad Ali, David Beckham, Michelle Kwan and Michael Johnson are among recent speakers.
