Ruslan Tsarni, uncle of Boston suspects: ‘Turn yourself in’

Ruslan Tsarni, the uncle of the two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings, addressed the press Thursday afternoon.

The uncle of the two men suspected of bombing the Boston Marathon finish line, Ruslan Tsarni, asked for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to turn himself in and ask for forgiveness.

Tsarni spoke to reporters from Montgomery Village, Md., about his two nephews. Tsarni has not seen them in five or six years, and said the attacks are not representative of the family or of Chechens.

“I respect this country and I love this country,” he said about the United States.

When asked what could have provoked the bombings, Tsarni said “hatred toward those who were able to settle themselves” and “being losers.”

“Of course we’re ashamed,” he said.

Tsarni, a Muslim, took a strong stance and said this attack has nothing to do with religion or Islam.

“He put a shame on our family,” he said. “He put a shame on the entire Chechen ethnicity.”

Tsarni has not seen his nephews since they were children but believes someone radicalized them and insists it was not his brother, the suspects’ father.

He said that he had encouraged his own family to stay away from that part of the family.

Another uncle came forward, Alvi Tsarni, who told CBS News he also had not spoken to his nephews in years.

That changed last night when Tamerlan called him to apologize for that.

“Yesterday, he called me and said, ‘Forgive me,’” Alvi Tsarni said.

He expressed disbelief that his nephews could be behind the marathon attacks.

“I’m sorry too if he did this. It’s crazy. … It’s not possible. … I cannot believe he did this,” he said.
