Starting Thursday night and for the next 24 hours, the city of Boston was on a hunt for the two men allegedly responsible for the Boston Marathon bombings. Starting with the shooting of an MIT police officer as the night progressed, the story became even more complex. It wasn’t until late Friday night the city could breathe a sigh of relief as Dzhokar Tsarnaev was taken into police custody, after a day-long manhunt in Watertown.

Amidst the chaos Thursday night, a story was published giving more details on how the FBI identified the Tsarnaev brothers as the suspects.

Jeff Bauman was a critical part of the process. Bauman is the young man seen being pushed in a wheel chair by Carlos Arredondo, the man wearing the cowboy hat who quickly rushed to the scene to help the injured.

Bauman was at the finish line to see his girlfriend finish the race, according to Bloomberg News. “Minutes before the bomb blew up in Boston, Jeff Bauman looked into the eyes of the man who tried to kill him.”

When the bombs went off, Bauman was rushed to Boston Medical Center where both of his legs were amputated at the knee.

When he woke up, under many drugs, he asked for a paper and a pen and wrote ‘bag, saw the guy, looked right at me’, said his brother Chris Bauman.

The FBI won’t comment on specifics but Chris said Jeff met with agents while he was still in intensive care and gave them a description of the suspect. He described a man wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt. Bauman said the suspect dropped the bag at his feet and two and a half minutes later it exploded.

Bauman’s description matches that of Suspect #1, who eventually died early Friday morning in a shootout with police officers.

Bauman is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries. To donate to the campaign ‘BUCKS FOR BAUMAN,’ which is raising money for Bauman’s medical bills, click here.
