State Assembly agrees to ban shark fin sales in New York State
The New York Assembly has agreed that shark fin soup should not be legal in New York.
Legislators voted Monday to ban trade of shark fins in New York State. The Senate had already approved the measure.
Critics have said the sharks are brutally killed for their fins, which are sometimes used in dishes like shark fin soup.
The Wildlife Conservation Society’s John Calvelli applauded the move.
“The New York State legislature’s passage of a ban on the sale or trade of shark fins in New York is a valuable step toward raising awareness of the plight of sharks globally and how local demand contributes to their decline,” he said.
The bill now goes to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
