Ydych chi’n siarad Cymraeg? NY’s only Welsh pub accused of discrimination (Quiz: Could you apply?)

The owners of a Welsh-themed pub in Brooklyn face a fine of $7,500 after they advertised for staff with a knowledge of the small principality’s culture.

Owners Michael Colbert, who’s from Wales, and his American wife Jennifer, owners of the Longbow Pub and Pantry,  said the advert required a ‘specific skill.” But the New York Commission of Human Rights ruled the advert was discriminatory.

Wales is not, technically, a country, but a principality of Britain, although national pride burns strongly.

The couple says their pub is the only Welsh boozer in New York City and needed staff who were aware of Welsh language and culture. But they did not specify, or care about, nationality of applicants.

Mrs Colbert told the British Broadcasting Corporation: “The city has to protect the population against discrimination.

“However, in our case it is imperative that our staff understand British culture no matter how that happens.

“Did we write that only British people can apply? Of course we didn’t. We are not looking to discriminate based on national origin.”

The couple already face a $2,100 bill as part of the conciliation process with the Human Rights Commission, but say that will rise to $7,500 if they fight their case in court, and lose. But they are keen to have their day in court to explain the ‘nuance’ of the situation.

  1. Ok, try again, (your site did not tell me i had a time limit for writing comment, so these are now being written off-line and pasted)

Diddorol (interesting), I’m not sure how many Welsh people, or people living in Wales would know the answers to most of those questions, nor how relevant they are to everyday life. What I do know is that Welsh culture is vibrant and distinctive outside the old stereotypes (one of them being that Wales is a Principality)

Wales is a country with its own Welsh Government, though sadly with limited powers as allowed by the disintegrating colonial government in the English Westminster parliament.

If you are interested in knowing whats going on in Wales it’s easy in these days of the internet. That’s one of the reasons why we set up “Pitch”, the arts and culture programme on Radio Cardiff (www.radiocardiff.org), to let people outside Wales know what’s going on in our capital city, and in a way that doesn’t have to follow promotional / celeb agendas.

We are genuinely interested in what genuinely interests us, and this week it just happens to include a couple of American artists who are making work here in the coming week – we don’t care about the colours of their flag, the size of their country, what happens on the 4th of July, etc – we are interested in them because they come here and do something interesting. So, between 10am and 11am GMT(i think that’s what it’s called, but i really don’t like the idea of english imperialists dictating time) on http://www.radiocardiff.org Jeff Byrd and Corbet Fogue will be talking about their work here… and i doubt it will involve lame national stereotypes.

May we all truly be interested in one another

  2. Sorry Tony, Wales hasn’t been a principality since over 200 years before you in the US were able to claim your independence from London rule… but then English soldiers don’t have as far to travel to enforce their rule on our land as they did yours.

    • Believe it or not, William Jones, our dear editor-in-chief Tony is British! He knows a thing or two.

      • By ‘british’ I assume you mean he’s English? Well, I’m afraid he can’t know that much if he truly thinks we’re a principality! Can you suggest he reads http://wales.gov.uk/about/history/ – a very useful page made by the Welsh government.. and brushes up on his knowledge about his neighbour? diolch!
