Police arrested a man early Sunday morning for allegedly firing shots at officers following a dispute on South Street.

Investigators said three people shortly after 1:45 a.m. got in an argument with the man – later identified as Isaac Carmichael, 43 – on the 600 block of South Street because Carmichael attempted to hit on one of the female victims.

When the group told Carmichael to leave them alone, he allegedly became verbally abusive, grabbed the woman and threatened all three victims with a gun he had tucked in his waistband.

Police said as Carmichael walked away, he crossed South Street, pulled out the gun and fired one shot toward the group of people, missing them but striking a car they were standing near.

As the crowd began to run from the gunfire, nearby officers noticed the chaos and entered the fray.

Authorities said a sergeant and an officer chased Carmichael as he ran toward the 700 block of Kater Street.

During the chase, Carmichael allegedly fired shots at both the sergeant and the officer.

The officials were joined by responding 17th District officers, who assisted the sergeant in arresting Carmichael without further incident.

No injuries to police or civilians were reported as a result of the incident.

Investigators allegedly retrieved multiple shell casings from the scene and recovered from Carmichael a loaded Jennings Bryco .32-caliber semi-automatic handgun with one live round remaining.

Carmichael has in the past been charged with multiple crimes, including at least two firearms offenses, according to police.

Officials with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are reviewing the alleged crime to see if any federal laws were violated.

Police in a release cited the restraint shown by officers as an example of their bravery and situational awareness.

“This was an area crowded with civilians and these officer clearly would have been justified in returning fire, but they didn’t want to risk injury to any other civilians,” a spokeswoman wrote in an email.

“So with disregard for their own safety, in effort to protect the public, they bravely continued to pursue this male until he was apprehended without discharging their weapons.”

Carmichael, of the 5700 block of North 12th Street in Fern Rock, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and firearms offenses.
