Lucky Star buses between Boston and New York were shut down Wednesday, after an inspection by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The bus company posted a message on its website which read, “Per the order of USDOT, Lucky Star Bus has temporary ceased operations. All affected e-ticket customers will be receiving a refund automatically. Thanks!”

A similar notice alerting passengers to the closure was posted at the Lucky Star ticket counter at Boston’s South Station, according to WBZ-TV.

Lucky Star isn’t the first Boston-to-New York bus company to have problems.

Earlier this year, the DOT shut down the Fung Wah company after a long history of safety issues.

“Bus companies that jeopardize public safety and refuse to cooperate with our investigators have no place on the road, and now, thanks to our additional authority, we can take them off,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a statement about Fung Wah. “Safety is our highest priority, and we will continue to do all we can to ensure that unsafe bus companies are not on our roads.”

In February, two pedestrians suffered serious injuries when they were hit by a Fung Wah bus in New York.

Dozens of passengers were injured when a Fung Wah bus rolled over in 2006. Another bus caught fire in 2005.
