Man gets maximum sentence for brutal Easter robbery of woman, 93

A judge on Wednesday handed down the maximum penalty to a Bridesburg man convicted of robbery and assault for last year’s brutal Easter Sunday attack of a 93-year-old woman.

Calling the incident “a crime against humanity,” Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Robert P. Coleman sentenced 30-year-old Antonio Santiago to 20 to 40 years behind bars for assaulting Estelle DiCamillo, 93, near her Rhawnhurst home on April 8, 2012.

Investigators said DiCamillo was walking home from Bells Corner Supermarket on the 8300 block of Loretto Avenue when Santiago attacked her from behind, grabbed her pocketbook, pushed her to the ground and fled.

Coleman pointed out Santiago made away with only a pack of Kleenex, a partial denture and some checks that were in DiCamillo’s purse.

“She would have probably given them to you if you asked her,” he said.

Santiago was arrested April 14 after police circulated surveillance footage showing him circling the area of the crime.

DiCamillo’s daughter, Anne Marie Kennedy, testified Wednesday that her mother never returned to her longtime home and remains in chronic pain and on constant medication, calling the woman “a shell of what she used to be.”

“It’s like the life has been sucked out of her,” Kennedy said.

Santiago, who spoke on his own behalf, apologized for the crime but insisted he was innocent.

“It should never have happened,” he said.

“But I am not an animal and I am not the person you’re making me out to be.”
