Anthony Criscuolo, the elementary school teacher arrested yesterday morning and charged with raping his 10-year-old female student, was arraigned last night at approximately 12:45 a.m., the Bronx District Attorney’s Office said.

Criscuolo, formerly a fifth-grade special education teacher, is accused of having raped the young girl in his car on Monday night, after telling her and her mother he was taking her to an event at another school where she would receive an award.

The girl’s mother reportedly contacted police on Tuesday when she discovered an email Criscuolo allegedly sent her daughter.

According to the criminal complaint submitted by an NYPD detective with the Bronx Special Victims Squad, the email was sent at 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday from an address Criscuolo had been using to communicate with the young student for at least two months.

The criminal complaint states that the email said, in part, something to the effect of: “I was too rough. Sorry. It’s normal. You may feel pain for a few days… Your hymen was broken…If you mean not a virgin then yes… How did it feel for you?”

The alleged abuse first occurred in April at the school where Criscuolo taught the student, P.S. 386. The complaint also described a second incident in May.

Parents of students at the school said Criscuolo has a girlfriend who also works at the school, CBS reported.

When asked for comment on Criscuolo’s arrest, the New York City teachers’ union, the United Federation of Teachers, said the matter is under investigation.

The Department of Education yesterday said they will seek to terminate Criscuolo’s contract. Criscuolo has tenure, so for the time being he will remain employed, but has been reassigned away from the school and any students, the DOE said.

Criscuolo’s bail was set at $500,000 cash or $750,000 bond and he was ordered to hand over all of his travel documents.

Criscuolo is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday.
