Police: Man wearing bag over head tries to rob Midtown II Diner

Police are looking for two men who early Sunday morning attempted to rob the Midtown II Restaurant in Center City.

Officers shortly after 6:20 a.m. responded to a radio call for a robbery in progress at 122 S. 11th St.

Employees told responders two men entered the diner from the rear.

One of the men, who was wearing a plastic bag or mask over his head, allegedly went into the restaurant’s basement and confronted a 52-year-old employee with a long object wrapped in a plastic bag.

The employee told police the man pointed the object at him and demanded money, to which the victim replied he didn’t have any.

Police said the suspect then fled up the stairs and out the diner’s rear.

Another employee, who was not yet working, told investigators he was standing outside the restaurant and across Sansom Street when he saw a young man standing by the diner’s back door.

The young man was several second later joined by another man, who came running out of the restaurant carrying an unknown object inside what appeared to be a white Save-A-Lot shopping bag, the employee stated.

Authorities said that man immediately pulled a mask down over his face and fled west on Sansom toward 12th Street.

The second man turned north on 11th Street and fled toward Walnut Street.

Police said nothing was taken, and there were no injuries to employees or customers.

The suspect who allegedly waited by the diner’s back door is described as a black male in his early 20s wearing a gray and white baseball shirt and cut-off jeans.

The suspect who allegedly entered the diner’s basement is described as a short, possibly Hispanic male with a light complexion wearing a black shirt.
