Pedestrian killed by alleged drunken driver in Delaware
An elderly pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV operated by an allegedly drunken driver on Delaware Route 1 near Dewey Beach Thursday night.
Police identified the victim as Roy E. Love, 79, of Reheboth Beach, the News Journal of Wilmington reports. His wife, 75-year-old Helene L. Love, was also injured in the crash.
The fatal accident happened about 9:30 p.m.
The Loves were struck by a Lincoln SUV allegedly operated by Matthew T. O’Connor, 25, of Washington, D.C. They were not in a crosswalk, according to the report.
O’Connor was arrested at the scene. He is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and police say additional charges are possible.
Helene Love was flown to Christiana Hospital after initially being treated at Beebe Medical Center. She was last reported to be in critical condition.
