Officer Edward Davies remains hospitalized in critical condition

Philadelphia Police Officer Edward Davies, 41, who was shot Tuesday afternoon in Feltonville after struggling with a suspect involved in a traffic stop, remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday, officials said in a brief update.

Police are asking for people for donations to a blood drive in Davies’ honor slated for noon through 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 and 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16.

Police officers can donate by visiting the Temple Administrative Services Building Training Room 8, located at 2450 W. Hunting Park Ave.

The general public can visit the Red Cross Donation Center at 700 Spring Garden St.

Davies, a six-year veteran of the Department, is married and has four children.

He was assigned to the 25th District, where officers just before noon Tuesday performed a traffic stop on a 1998 BMW that had a broken tail light.

Authorities said the car’s occupant was “moving around within the vehicle” and “very evasive toward officers.”

He allegedly handed the officers a license, fled in the car, then crashed the vehicle near Bristol Street and Rising Sun Avenue.

Officers responding to that location – including Officer Davies – received information the suspect ran into a store on the 400 block of Annsbury Street and gave chase.

Police said “a violent struggle ensued” during which Officer Davies was shot in the abdomen, just below his ballistic vest.

He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was immediately taken into surgery.

Authorities described his condition Tuesday night as “extremely critical” with “life-threatening injuries.”

Police recovered from the scene a .45-caliber handgun that was reported stolen in a burglary last June.

Officers also took into custody Eric Torres, 31, for allegedly shooting Officer Davies.

Investigators said Torres has 12 prior arrests, with offenses including assaults on police officers and narcotics charges.

Torres faces charges of attempted murder, assault and firearms offenses.

Police officials said in an email Wednesday morning there were no updates regarding Officer Davies’ condition.

“Please continue to keep Officer Davies and his family in your prayers,” the message concluded.
