Woman arrested in motel parking lot with drugs, gun, ammo

Delaware State Police Monday night arrested a woman in the parking lot of a Dover motel after they said a search of her vehicle yielded a handgun, along with a cache of drugs and ammunition.

Officers with the Kent County Governor’s Task Force were shortly before 11:30 p.m. arresting a probation violator at the Kent Budget Motel, located at 383 N. DuPont Hwy.

While in the parking lot, a trooper spotted a white Chevrolet Blazer and recognized its driver, 42-year-old Dorena Coleman, from a previous arrest.

Believing Coleman likely had active capiases, the trooper approached her car and asked for identification.

That’s when Coleman allegedly threw an object toward the vehicle’s center console and became uncooperative.

Police said she had to be pulled from the car and was finally detained for two active warrants.

Investigators said they found inside Coleman’s Chevy a loaded .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun, which was sitting under a makeup bag on the center console near the area Coleman was allegedly seen throwing the object.

A further search of the vehicle allegedly turned up a box of ammunition, 96 bags of heroin totaling 1.92 grams, 1.3 grams of cocaine, nine strips of Suboxone and fifteen prescription pills.

Coleman was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count each of possession of a controlled substance in a tier-1 quantity, possession of a prescription drug without a prescription, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed deadly weapon and resisting arrest.

She was also arraigned on her two capiases.

Coleman was jailed at the Sussex Correctional Institution on $50,500 cash bail.
