An independent review will be conducted into the way the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office handled the case of Jared Remy, who was released the day before he allegedly killed his girlfriend.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced the independent review on Wednesday. One state representative has called for her resignation amid the controversy.

Remy, the son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, is accused of fatally stabbing his girlfriend Jennifer Martel last Thursday. The day before the stabbing, prosecutors agreed to release him on personal recognizance after he was arrested for assault and battery on Martel.

“The death of Jennifer Martel is a horrific tragedy, and it would be irresponsible for our office not to re-examine what happened,” Ryan said in a statement.

Former Essex County District Attorney Kevin Burke and Norfolk County First Assistant District Attorney Jeanmarie Carroll will lead the independent review that Ryan’s office said would be a “fact-finding assessment” that will also determine if the office’s policies and procedures were followed and whether they are sufficient to “adequately address the offender release issues which arise in domestic violence cases.”

“I am confident that District Attorney Burke and First Assistant Carroll will conduct a thorough and independent review of this case, and we will utilize these findings to make any changes necessary to better protect victims,” Ryan said.

“It is important to emphasize that while this review process continues, our focus remains on the prosecution of Jennifer Martel’s killer and our thoughts are with Jennifer’s family.”
