Brockton basketball tournament stopped after ref attack
A church basketball tournament in Brockton came to a violent end this weekend when a referee was attacked and someone threatened to open fire at the event.
A 19-year-old Brockton man was charged with various crimes including assault after the incident.
Police said a referee at the Saturday afternoon event reported having a water bottle thrown at him, being punched in the side of the head and then having four or five youths start throwing punches at him when the game ended, according to The Enterprise. The youths then fled.
Police shut down the tournament after someone threatened to bring back a gun to the basketball courts.
It was unclear if the referee sought medical treatment for his injuries, according to The Enterprise.
