Quick thinking from some officers in the Brooklyn North Gang Division ended with the arrest of a teenager who was carrying a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun.

Sgt. Joseph Cruzado and officers Daniel Grandstaff and Paul Molinaro were driving in an unmarked patrol car at 8 p.m., Tuesday when they saw two teen men walking on Marcy and Gates avenues in Brooklyn. One of the officers saw a teen slide a knife into his pocket as they passed.

When the officers approached to talk with the teens, one of the teens adjusted an object in the front of his waistband, then ran. Molinaro chased him on foot while Grandstaff followed in a police car.

As the suspect neared the park at Monroe Street and Marcy Avenue, both of the officers noticed the teen throw a gun in front of the benches in the playground. The suspect was finally apprehended outside of 346 Thompkins Ave.

A loaded 9mm Hi Point semiautomatic handgun was recovered from the park. During the chase, Cruzado remained with the other suspect, who was in possession of the knife.

Both of the teens were arrested.
