Some cyclists will be trading in their bicycles for an MBTA bus with the hope of avoiding cycling crashes and reducing cyclist injuries.

In an effort to halve the cycling crash rate by 2020, the city is hosting a safety demonstration to help riders understand the view from larger vehicles during an event at City Hall Plaza on Friday morning. Boston Bikes’ urban cycling safety demonstration begins at 7 a.m.

During the demonstration, cyclists will be able to sit behind the wheel of a T bus to see for themselves the driver’s blind spots, examine the new truck side guards on larger city vehicles and receive some safety gear.

The effort is in response to the Cyclists Crash Report released by the city earlier this year that examined cycling crashes since 2010. The city and cycling groups have also been working to educate cyclists on urban biking safety as it has become more popular in recent years.

City officials said Friday’s event will be a prelude to a larger, citywide urban cycling campaign the city will soon unveil.
