What’s the best way to get teenagers to listen to the ultra-cool message of safely using public transportation?

The Safety Bounce, of course.

Today the MBTA debuted a rap video featuring MBTA mascot Charlie doing the Safety Bounce with transit employees and teens.

The video is part of the T’s Safety First campaign, which runs in conjunction with the start of the school year and includes signs and safety information for teens.

T officials said all production costs associated with the video were covered by the T’s advertising contractor, Titan.

Some of the lyrics include, “Now watch me bounce while I ride it out/Bounce when you ride it out/Look before you step/See the curb and peep the yellow line/The gap is not your friend.”

Good manners are also encouraged, with lyrics like, “Please don’t litter/Don’t hog no seats/Hands off the driver/Last not least/Hold your kids/Don’t yell on the phone/Let others off before you get on/And bounce when you ride it out.”

The video had over 4,500 views on YouTube as 5 p.m. Wednesday.

MBTA General Manager Dr. Beverly Scott, who appears in the opening of the video, said the campaign “pairs safety messages with images and easy-to-remember phrases.”

Scott joined Charlie at Haymarket Station today, where the two practiced some of the video’s dance moves.

This isn’t the first safety-themed hip-hop video Scott has put out while heading up a transit agency. “The Safety Slide” was released while she was serving as general manager of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.

Although the Safety Bounce is aimed at teens, Scott said the crucial message of “safety first” is universal.

“If we do all the other things well, and we are not safe, we have not done our job,” she said.

Along with the song and video, hundreds of signs will be posted inside subway cars and buses, and City Year will distribute a “safety kit” to students in the Boston Public School system.

The video will be shown on digital screens at Harvard, Park Street, and North Stations. It is also available on YouTube.
