Massachusetts State Police said they have placed a 25-year-old trooper on indefinite unpaid leave after he was arrested for allegedly killing a mother and daughter while driving drunk.

John Basler, of Kingston, is charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and carrying a firearm while under the influence of liquor after he allegedly colliding head-on into a car driven by Susan Macchi, 64, of Carver on Sept. 22, killing her and her passenger, 23-year-old Juliet Macchi of Plymouth.

State Police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement, “Upon completion of a duty status hearing held this morning at Massachusetts State Police General Headquarters in Framingham, the department ordered Trooper John Basler suspended without pay indefinitely. Additionally, the department’s Internal Affairs Section will open an investigation into Basler’s conduct to determine if he violated departmental rules and policies.”

Basler was off-duty at the time of the crash. Police said he was sworn in as a trooper in March 2012.

The duty status hearing was scheduled after the Plymouth Police Department notified state police late last week that it intended to charge Basler with operating under the influence and related charges in connection with a motor vehicle crash in that town.

The crash reconstruction by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section is ongoing; when complete, the reconstruction findings will be presented to the Plymouth Police Department and the Plymouth District Attorney’s Office. Those agencies will determine whether additional criminal charges are warranted.

Basler, who was injured in the crash, did not attend this morning’s hearing but was represented by counsel.
