State Rep. Brian Sims (D-Phila.) was today joined by Rep. Steve Carter (D-Mont.Phila.) and LGBT supporters at Love Park to announce the introduction of the Pennsylvania Marriage Equality Act.

“Pennsylvania cannot continue to be stuck in the past,” Sims said in a news release. “The time has come for Pennsylvania’s legislature to stand up and let our citizens know we see them as truly equal members of society and they have the right to choose whom they marry.”

The two legislators said they’ve received bipartisan support for the bill, known as HB 1686.

McCarter said the issue goes way beyond the legalization of same-sex marriage. “This is about ensuring all Pennsylvanians have equal benefits and protections before the law.”

Malcolm Lazin, executive director of the Equality Forum, is being honest when he says the chances of the bill moving in the legislature is “slim to none.”

“The House and the Senate are controlled by Republicans,” he said. “The governor is a Republican who opposes same sex marriage. But things need to start somewhere.”
