Killer hornets leave over 40 dead in China

Giant hornets are terrorizing residents of Shaanxi Province in China. As of Thursday, the killer hornets left 42 dead and 1,640 people injured including 206 people receiving treatment in the hospital, reports Xinhua. This video from LiveLeak shows firefighters battling hornets in Shaanxi province.

Firefighters are destroying nests and putting out public service announcements asking people to wear long sleeves and not to try to drive away from the swarms.

The National Health and Family Planning Commission told Xinhua it is “calling for utmost efforts in treating patients and minimizing the number of casualties.” An insect expert told Xinhua the rise in attacks is due in part to local vegetation growth and two months of hot weather, which makes the hornets more active.

Though Ankang City in Shaanxi Province has been hit the hardest, hornet attacks have injured people all over China. In early September, 30 people were injured at a primary school in Guanxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, reports Xinhua. A teacher said he lost consciousness as he tried to protect his students from the hornets.

In Shandong Province, one man relayed a terrifying account to the Qingdao Evening News. A 36-year-old man, surname Zhang, found a hornet’s nest in front of his family’s home in the town of Ligezhuang on Saturday. He saw no hornets, so he poked it with a stick thinking there may be honey and found himself chased by swarms of giant hornets for hundreds of meters. He soon found his stings growing larger and larger in size. Doctors at his local hospital said Zhang had symptoms of poisoning, including rapid heartbeat and dizziness. They added that the venom can damage kidneys, the heart and the liver.
