Pennsylvania game commissioners want public input on bald eagle status

The bald eagle is listed as a threatened species in the state of Pennsylvania, but that could change unless Pennsylvanians have something to say about it.

The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners voted last week to open a period of public review for a proposal to upgrade the bald eagle’s status from threatened to protected in the state, according to a news release.

Threatened status indicates a species may become endangered in the foreseeable future. The change, which would require a board vote, could occur as early as January.

Thirty years ago the Game Commission launched a program  to restore bald eagle nests across the Commonwealth. At the time, the state was home to only three nests. Twelve eaglets were plucked from wild Canadian nests and raised and released in Pennsylvania. Now, the state boasts 271 nests.

All comments on the proposal can be sent to BaldEagleComments@pa.gov. Written submissions will also be accepted, and can be directed to: The Pennsylvania Game Commission, ATTN: Bald Eagle Comments, 2001 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110-9797.
