Update:

Police confirmed today that a 4-year-old Pre-K Thomas Mifflin School student brought eight bags of crack cocaine and $173 cash to school Tuesday morning.

The boy, police said, told authorities the drugs belonged to his mother’s boyfriend.

Police spokeswoman Tanya Little said while criminal charges have not yet been filed, “Somebody has to be accountable for it.”

“But at this moment, the investigation is ongoing.”

School District Spokesman Fernando Gallard said the student at the East Falls elementary school, at the 3000 block of Conrad Street, showed the contents of his pockets to another student, who then reported the incident to the teacher.

Previous reports indicated the boy handed the teacher’s aide the drugs before he washed his hands.

“What I know is that the child in question showed off the cash to another student, and that student then said to the teacher, so-and-so and has a lot of cash in his pocket,” Gallard said. “And then the teacher asked the child to empty his pockets and that’s how they found the items.”

The boy was taken to a near-by hospital as a precaution, Gallard said. Police swept the school, but no other drugs were found.

Letters were sent out yesterday to all members of the Mifflin school community describing what had occured, Gallard said.

They boy’s parents were contacted, and police and the Department of Human Services will determine the boy’s custody.

Original Story:

Before a 4-year-old Thomas Mifflin Elementary School student washed his hands, he handed the classroom attendant sandwich bags that contained what is suspected to be crack cocaine, police said.

A search through the boy’s pockets turned up a total of eight bags along with $173. The attendant then called authorities, police said.

Police swept the school, at the 3000 block of Conrad Street in East Falls, about 10:30 a.m. No other drugs were found.

Northwest division detectives are attempting to contact the boy’s parents.
