Several reported break-ins at Taunton homes have residents on high alert, particularly due to their bizarre nature.

In three break-ins in the last three months, a stocky man has entered Taunton homes and touched women as they slept, regardless of whether there was another person sleeping in the bed.

In one of the cases, the man sexually assaulted a victim. According to the Taunton Gazette, she woke up screaming when she realized there was a man under the blankets.

Taunton police chief Edward Walsh posted a public safety alert on the department’s Facebook page Tuesday.

“We have recently seen a series of house breaks that we feel necessitates a public warning. These breaks have been occurring in the Barnum, Clinton and Winthrop Street areas. Jewelry is usually taken. All of the breaks have occurred overnight with the resident sleeping in the house. Access has been gained through unlocked doors and windows. In each case the suspect has approached the sleeping female victim in her bed and made some form of physical conduct with her. This has happened regardless of whether someone else was also in the bed with the female victim. There is a wide disparity in the age of the victims.”

The suspect is described as a stocky white male with dark hair and a light beard.

Authorities are asking Taunton-area residents to prevent further incidents by locking their doors and windows.
