A lengthy standoff at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield came to an end shortly after midnight Wednesday.

The gunman, a 54-year-old man from West Springfield, shot himself in the head while sitting in his Fiat after a standoff with police at the Springfield hospital, where the man’s wife had been brought after he shot her during an argument in their home earlier in the evening. The standoff forced the hospital’s campus into lockdown on Tuesday night.

Officers on the scene immediately rushed the gunman into the Baystate ER Trauma Unit, but he could not be saved, according to Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney. The man’s name will be released later on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, the man shot his wife at  their Piper Road home, and then brought her to Baystate Medical Center for treatment. He then went to his Fiat, parked in the emergency room lot and sat there with a gun to his head for four hours.

According to authorities, the man’s wife is in stable condition at Baystate, and will recover from her injuries.

Despite a lockdown of the hospital campus, Springfield Police said there was never any grave danger to other people in the area.

“At no time was any patient, employee or civilian ever in any danger,” Sgt. John Delaney said in a statement. “The hospital was never shut down.”
