Company proposes sexist car

The U.K.’s top car parts website has proposed the world’s first sexist car, or the “woman-proof” car, as they call it. The original post on BreakerYard.com’s website said, “A new set of concept images released by the UK’s number one network of approved national breakers have envisaged a ‘woman proof car’ – which specifically caters for women drivers who’re a little unsure behind the wheel,” reports Metro UK.

Breakeryard.com founder Matt Bott admitted to Metro UK that the car is a “slightly tongue in cheek” concept. The bubbly pink car is meant to overcome the challenges of parallel parking with a swivel seat and a wider range of vision. After getting heat from the media, it appears BreakerYard.com edited its post to instead be called “The Parking Proof Car.”

BreakerYard.com seemed to implicitly apologize for its sexist undertones, saying: “Initially, we performed a study where we questioned 1,421 female drivers about some of the issues that they face when driving. The poll incorporated the responses of women who all deemed themselves to be ‘non-confident drivers’, so apologies to female rally drivers in advance. This isn’t likely to be one for you!” The URL still says “woman proof car concept image.”

This isn’t the first time BreakerYard has talked down to women. One blog post from OCt. 23 was titled, “Do women need help buying a car?” with a page title of “Buying a car can be daunting, especially for women.”
