Local and state authorities in New Jersey will be out in force conducting sobriety checkpoints starting this weekend through the Labor Day holiday as part of a statewide crackdown.

The “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” campaign is part of a national effort to raise awareness about drinking and driving. The campaign includes high-visibility enforcement, posters and signs posted on area bridges.

The Delaware River Port Authority will also be taking part in the crackdown.

“This initiative brings attention to not only the serious fines and penalties drunk drivers can face, but also the grave danger those drivers pose to all individuals on the road,” said DRPA Police Chief David McClintock.

Last December, DRPA officials made nine drunk-driving arrests through “Over the Limit, Under Arrest.” It also resulted in one fugitive apprehension, one drug arrest, 11 speeding tickets and several other violations.
