Two people killed, another critically injured in Tacony blaze
A teenager and a child were killed and a third person critically injured in an early-morning fire in an apartment building in Tacony.
Firefighters arrived on the 6800 block of Torresdale Avenue at 4:49 a.m. where flames were raging in a second-floor apartment over top of a barber shop. The fire was put under control at 5:37 a.m. Firefighters found a teenage girl and a male child who were both pronounced dead on the scene. A woman has been taken to Aria Torresdale in critical condition.
Reports indicate the home had no smoke detectors and no gas, although a department spokesman could not immediately confirm that. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The two deaths mark the first deaths from a fire in the new year. One person involved in a December fire died earlier this month. Last year, 32 people in Philadelphia died as a result of fire. Twenty-seven of those were in homes without working smoke alarms.
