Philadelphia, home to the largest Martin Luther King Jr. Day of service in the country, also hosted a symbolic ringing of the liberty bell by Malcom X’s daughters Malaak Shabazz and Ilyasah Shabazz. Mrs. King first requested that a bell ringing ceremony be hosted in Philadelphia to celebrate the holiday in 1986.
