UPDATED Suspect identified in city’s 41st murder had lengthy rap sheet

Suspect Anthony Baker, 26.

Police have identified the city’s 41st murder victim of the year, as well as the suspect in his slaying.

David McClenic, 24, of the 7000 block of Louise Road in West Oak Lane, was shot multiple times at West Hansberry and Marion streets in Germantown around 1:29 a.m. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

McClenic was walking with his girlfriend when he was attacked by a mob of neighborhood men, one of whom opened fire on him from behind. The attack was unprovoked, police said.

Police are seeking Anthony Baker, 26, as the alleged shooter. He is described as a black male, 5 foot 5 inches and 130 pounds, with a last known address on the 6300 block of Algard Street in Mayfair. His aliases include Sath, Satu, Jalio, Tykeem and Thomas Baker, as well as Jamir Dent, according to court documents.

Baker is well-known to authorities and has a lengthy rap sheet.

Court documents show that he was convicted of simple assault and retail theft in February of 2003 and sentenced to probation. He was convicted of manufacturing or delivering or possession with the intent of manufacturing or delivery controlled substance and possession in April of 2003 and sentenced to 18 to 23 months.

He pleaded guilty to burglary and criminal conspiracy in June of 2005 and was sentenced to nine to 23 months. He was convicted of possession and with intent to deliver and criminal conspiracy in July of 2005 and was sentenced to two and a half to five years.

He pleaded guilty to manufacturing or delivering or possession in November of 2006 and was sentenced to 11 1/2 to 23 months.

His most recent charge was in May of 2011, when he was convicted of criminal mischief, DUI under a controlled substance, attempting to elude an officer and sentenced to six months probation.

Baker also had seven court dates for probation violations, the most recent one scheduled for next Wednesday, Feb. 15.

This is the second such murder in three days – Dennis Gore Jr., son of a Philadelphia police officer, was shot five times in broad daylight in Overbrook Tuesday afternoon for seemingly no reason, also in front of his girlfriend. Police have not yet identified a suspect in that case.

The number of homicides is up over 15 percent compared with the same date last year, when there were 38 victims. There were 24 victims on this date in 2010.
