Autopsy results have revealed that six dead pit bulls found in South Philadelphia succumbed to bite wounds, Pennsylvania SPCA officials said today.

“It appears that the animals were used in dog fighting,” PSPCA director of Humane Law Enforcement George Bengal said. “These animals appeared to be losers in a fight and the remains were dumped there at that location.”

He said railroad workers on Jan. 30 found the dogs’ bodies stuffed in garbage bags near 26th Street and Washington Avenue. The PSPCA is now offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for their deaths.

“We believe that the individuals that did this are not too far away, probably somewhere in the South Philadelphia area where the animals were discovered,” Bengal said.

He said authorities don’t yet have any leads, but the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-866-601-SPCA. Tips can be left anonymously.
