Penn professor wins best documentary and best director at San Diego Black Film Festival

Tukufu Zuberi, chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, won the Best Documentary Film and Best Director awards at the 2013 San Diego Black Film Festival for his first film,  “African Independence.”

The film highlights Africa’s history starting with the enslavement and colonization by Europeans and transitions into the continent’s fight for independence.

Zuberi financed and produced the documentary with his company, TZ Production Company, which he started in 2007.

Zuberi is also known for hosting the nationally syndicated PBS television series “History Detectives” for 10 seasons.
